Recently, our team at Kick It Junk Removal & Hauling was called to clear a three-bedroom, two-bath home in North Texas. By the time we arrived, the elderly homeowners were no longer living in the house. Their daughter was responsible for getting the home cleared so it could be sold.
But seeing the condition her parents’ home had reached was simply too much for her emotionally.
So her son stepped in.

When a Home Becomes Unsafe
The amount of belongings inside the house made it difficult to move through several areas of the property. Furniture, household items, boxes, clothing and accumulated possessions filled rooms and narrowed pathways.
But the clutter was only part of the problem.
One of the toilets was no longer functioning. Containers and boxes of bottled urine had accumulated throughout portions of the home because the homeowners had been unable to use the bathroom normally.
Furniture had also been affected by incontinence, and rodent droppings were present throughout the property.
Conditions like these change the nature of a hoarding cleanup.
This was no longer simply a matter of carrying furniture to a trailer. Our crew needed to work carefully around biological contamination while still respecting the family and the belongings inside the home.
Team members wore protective gloves and specialized masks while completing the cleanout. One member of our crew also has professional ambulance experience and training in safely working around human blood and biological hazards, giving our team additional experience for difficult environments like this one.
Not Everything in a Hoarder House Is Trash
One of the most important parts of this job happened while the home was being emptied.
The grandson knew there were important papers and documents mixed throughout years of accumulated belongings, including vehicle titles and other records that the family could not afford to accidentally lose.

Instead of simply throwing everything away, belongings were separated into three groups:

During the cleanup, Paul noticed something else concerning.
One of the bathrooms had an older ceiling-mounted heater common in older homes. The heater had apparently been left running for an extended period of time.
Directly underneath it was accumulated clutter.
In a home already filled with combustible belongings, that created a serious potential fire hazard.
It was another reminder that severe hoarding can become much more than a problem with clutter.
Blocked pathways, sanitation issues, pests, overloaded spaces and hidden fire hazards can eventually make a house unsafe for the people living inside it.
Six Heavily Packed Trailer Loads in Two Days
The entire interior of the three-bedroom, two-bath home was cleared over two days.
Nothing was removed from the garage or exterior of the property—the volume came entirely from inside the house.
By the time the project was complete, our crew had removed six extremely heavily packed trailer loads of belongings and debris.
Because our team loaded the trailers so densely and efficiently, the same amount of material would likely have filled closer to eight normal trailer loads.
It was a large-scale hoarding cleanout from beginning to end.
But the number of trailer loads is not what we will remember most about this job.
Sometimes the Family Needs Someone Else to Carry the Hard Part
We never met the elderly couple who had lived in the home.
By the time we arrived, their family was already navigating dementia, caregiving decisions, changing living arrangements and the difficult decision to sell the house.
Their daughter was carrying enough.
Her son recognized that walking into her parents’ home and dealing with everything inside would be emotionally overwhelming for her, so he stepped in and handled it.
And for two days, we helped him carry that responsibility.
